Regionalization of perinatal care
was initiated in Middle Tennessee in 1972. The neonatal
component of the program was formally established in 1974
statewide, with the obstetric component following in 1977.
The state was originally divided into four geographic regions with
designated regional perinatal centers located in the cities of
Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga. In 1986,
Johnson City was added as the fifth regional center. The
